Introducing Leonardo, the CPA Elementary Therapy Dog!

Leonardo the Therapy Dog

CPA Elementary is excited about welcoming a therapy dog to visit with our  students. Our hope is that this will positively impact the well-being and mental health of our students.

We know that there may be questions as to how this may work and would like to share some information that we have gathered.

What are the Benefits of Having a Visit by a School Dog?

● Provides a calming effect on students and reduces stress;

● Improves self-esteem, relieves anxiety and lifts mood;

● Teaches compassion and respect for other living things;

Other Things to Know about Leonardo the Therapy Dog:

● Allergies: Leonardo will not be in classrooms, so students with allergies will not be affected

● Valid dog license: Leonardo has a valid dog license in the town he resides.

● Leonardo is a trained therapy dog and has passed all necessary tests to be in our school

● Some children may have a fear of dogs. Leonardo will only be in contact with children that want to work with him.

Initially, only a few students will be working with Leonardo. If your child is selected, you will be notified before the meeting. All contact will be planned and children will not be left unsupervised with the dog. The dog will be on a lead/leash with the handler at all times.

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you want to opt out of this opportunity, please contact Kim Michalak: KimM@cpapk12.org by Wednesday, October 9th, 2024.
